About Dazeley Fine Art
Peter Dazeley is currently working on several on-going projects including x-ray, flora, pregnant women, anamorphic nudes and solarised (Sabatier effect) photography, out of his own studio complex in Parsons Green, off New Kings Road, Chelsea, London. Dazeley’s Solo exhibition "21st Century Platinum", at the Conningsby Gallery in London’s West End, was an exhibition of his personal work that had been an eight year journey of discovery, experimenting with different processes, lenses and techniques, looking for and photographing people and things that he found visually stimulating. Platinum Printing
The monochrome work was all produced as limited edition platinum prints of 25. Dazeley Fine Art works in close collaboration with a team of specialist printers, Paul and Max Caffell and Dominic Burd of 31 Studio, Gloucester, England. Interestingly, all three behind the studio are artists in their own right; all photograph, two paint and one sculpts. The exhibition was about taking photography back to its origins i.e. hand-coated papers produced to the original platino method devised by William Willis in the 1870s. The starting point is a precious metal, the noble metal platinum, which is used in the art of chemical alchemy. Platinum prints have a far larger tonal range than that achieved by modern black and white print processes, giving a distinctively rich, luminous quality with great shadow detail and warmth. The nature of this hand process provides uniqueness. Even within a short edition of the same image, each print carries diverse subtleties making it a unique interpretation in itself. This is one of the great advantages of such a handcrafted printing process, far removed from the world of mass produced silver-based papers and modern supports for digital outputs. With platinum printing, there is no reliance on factory prepared materials, each print of an edition being executed singly as though it were the only example of that image; an unrepeatable dialogue between the image, the chemistry and the printer’s skill. Producing archival prints lasting many lifetimes. Quotes
In the foreword to the exhibition catalogue written by renowned modern art collector Kay Saatchi, she comments "We try and take what is real to its surreal being. With the velvety tones of platinum printing the fine art photographer Dazeley does just this displaying an affinity with the innovations of that arch surrealist Man Ray". Interviewed during the exhibition, Andrew Coningsby of the Coningsby Gallery said "We are delighted to be showing Dazeley’s work. Most photographic cognoscenti agree that he is one of the most innovative photographers of the moment". "Many of the images have a grotesque beauty which is strangely compelling" says Gavin Blyth of Image Magazine. "In his anamorphic work, the lens stretches and morphs the human form creating an effect similar to Giacometti’s famous elongated sculptures. The detail and tonal range achieved in the images is quite remarkable and telegraphs their fine art credentials. For this exhibition is very much about Dazeley fine art photographer. 21st Century Platinum Exhibition
